Zippo Lighters FAQ
How do I change the flint in my Zippo lighter? Remove the inside unit from the case. Unscrew the flint spring from the bottom of the inside unit. Remove screw and attached spring. Be sure the remainder of the old flint has been removed from the flint tube. Place new flint in tube, replace spring and screw lightly. Make sure screw is turned as far as it will go, otherwise the cover will not close completely. You can purchase replacement flints here.
How do I change the wick in my Zippo lighter? Remove the inside unit from the case. Unscrew the flint spring from the bottom of the inside unit. Remove screw and attached spring. Remove felt pad. Use tweezers to remove all packing from fuel chamber. Insert new wick downward through chimney, pulling through with tweezers. Replace packing in small pieces, interweaving the wick between the padding pieces. Replace felt pad. Be sure the remainder of the old flint has been removed from the flint tube. Place new flint in tube, replace flint spring and screw lightly. Make sure screw is turned as far as it will go, otherwise the cover will not close completely. Be sure to trim wick even with chimney height. You can purchase replacement wicks here.
How do I add fuel to my Zippo lighter? Remove the inside unit from the case. Lift the corner of the felt pad on the bottom of the insert to reveal the packing material in the fuel chamber. Saturate the packing with Zippo lighter fluid. Fill slowly, taking care to never overfill. Avoid getting the lighter fluid on your skin as it can be a skin irritant. If contact with skin does occur, wash the effected area with mild soap and water.
Insert the inside unit back into the case, making sure to wipe the lighter and your hands dry before igniting. Be sure the fuel can is closed and there is no spilled fuel in the vicinity before igniting. This is a flammable fluid.
If the Zippo lighter is kept in your pocket, Zippo suggests that it be placed bottom down, especially when first re-fueled. You can purchase official Zippo fuel here.
Why does the Zippo lighter fluid evaporate so quickly? Zippo lighter fluid, by its very nature, will evaporate, even when the Zippo lighter is not used. We recommend you fill your Zippo lighter before you leave on a trip or outdoor excursion. Infrequently lit Zippo lighters should be filled before using.
Zippo Lighter Trouble Shooting We suggest that you use only genuine Zippo fluid and flints for optimal performance, since they are specially formulated to work in our lighters. The softer material used in some non-Zippo flints could clog the striking wheel, making the lighter difficult to light. Also, please be sure the wick is properly wound among the cotton packing located in the inside unit.
Lighter Information
What do the markings on the bottom of my zippo lighter mean? The markings at the bottom of our Zippo lighter cases are identification codes, which enable us to determine in what month and year a particular Zippo lighter was manufactured. These codes change from year to year.

Counting Down to 400 Million
Zippo to Produce Milestone Lighter September 3rd
Zippo employees expect to mark a major milestone soon after reporting to work the morning of September 3rd, when the 400 millionth windproof lighter rolls off the production line.
Zippo officials predict the milestone lighter will be stamped out during a run of Armor lighters, distinguished by a case about 1.5 times as thick as a standard case, and authenticated by a distinctive Armor bottom stamp. A commemorative logo, designed for the single 400 millionth lighter only, will be dimensionally deep carved, and the date and time of production will be engraved on the case.
State and local dignitaries are anticipated to join Zippo owners and senior employees for the celebration. An entourage will transport the lighter to the Zippo/Case Visitors Center, where it will be displayed in a temporary location until it is put into permanent display later this year.
Although it took 10 years to make the first million lighters, and 37 years to hit the 100 million mark, it has been only seven years since the 300 millionth Zippo lighter was produced on April 15, 1996.
Check back soon for celebration photos and wrap-up of the 400 millionth celebration.

Zippo is getting rave reviews for its starring role in the highly anticipated second installment in the X-Men series, “X2: X-Men United,” claimed the number one position at the box office this weekend.
One of the X-Men’s newest cohorts, Pyro, whose mutation allows him to manipulate fire, uses a custom-designed Zippo lighter as his flame source of choice in several of the movie’s most critical scenes. The lighter continually comes to the rescue, helping Pyro fend off enemies to allow the X-Men to continue their crusade to save the world. The lighter is a one-of-a-kind, three-sided design featuring a shark’s jaw on a satin chrome finish.

Zippo has taken an aggressive effort to cut down on counterfeiting by trade marking the shape of the pocket lighter. In addition, Zippo is making the bottom stamp on the powder coat pocket lighters more readily distinguishable to consumers.
The current powder coat process covers up the bottom stamp, making the date code, Zippo logo, and “Made in U.S.A.” less visible. Zippo founder, George G. Blaisdell, had the bottom of each Zippo lighter made since the mid-1950’s encoded with a series of dots and/or slashes so he could identify which run of lighters was being returned for repairs. What began as a quality-control tool for Mr. Blaisdell has become a collector’s dream and a way to precisely date most genuine Zippo lighters.
The new process involves lasering the powder coat off the bottom of the lighter all the way down to the metal, so the identification codes can be seen. It will be introduced in the Zippo 2003 Spring Choice Catalog on the new red and green textured matte lighters. By the end of 2003, this process will be implemented on all powder coat lighters.
This new powder coat finish process will make it easier to identify the genuine Zippo lighters made here in Bradford, PA.
